Course Description

Drawing upon empirical research from the Canadian context, this presentation will provide context around the salient challenges unpaid caregivers experience navigating the workplace, and the corresponding workplace and public policy supports that would enhance unpaid caregivers' capacity to work and provide care at the same time.

Learning Outcomes

  •  Have an improved understanding of challenges working unpaid caregivers experience navigating work and their care responsibilities.
  • Be able to reflect critically on how laws and legislation have created unique conditions that 1) drive unpaid caregivers to take time away from work to provide care, and 2) drive non-working (e.g., retired) caregivers to start working again even if they may not want to

PhD

Husayn Marani

Husayn Marani, PhD, is a health services researcher with an interest in healthcare policy, older adult care (namely dementia care) and the organization of human resources in home- and facility-based long-term care. He is currently a decision scientist at Ontario Health where he supports mixed methods evaluation of models of care. He also teaches a variety of courses in the areas of gerontology, community care, and health policy.
