Course Description
Workplace bullying and mistreatment are serious and costly problems for organizations and society. The Workplace Bullying and Mistreatment Partnership for Prevention is an innovative, multiyear, partnered research approach to generate evidence in Manitoba supporting prevention policies, practices, and initiatives. Traditionally, Canadian studies in this area are cross-sectional with small datasets and so the scope and impact in Canada are unclear. Led by Dr. Karen Harlos from the University of Winnipeg and funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), the team brings together interdisciplinary researchers across Canada, the UK, Germany, and Denmark, as well as decisionmakers and policy analysts from partner organizations, to produce large datasets using longitudinal, multimethod research. In this webinar, we describe the unique collaboration with the Manitoba Teacher’s Society (MTS)—a provincial organization representing 15,000 public school teachers on a variety of topics including labour matters, collective bargaining and professional issues—to pursue our shared goals of preventing workplace bullying and mistreatment and promoting safe and inclusive schools for educators.
You will learn:
- A new methodology around the use of educator-focused surveys and focus group interviews to learn about employees’ experiences from multiple perspectives: target; observer, and perpetrator
- The prevalence and impact of workplace bullying and mistreatment within this context
- Whether certain groups of employees run greater risks of exposure to and negative impact from workplace bullying and mistreatment, along with factors related to seeking help and the importance of policy and training on prevention
- How results can guide decision and policy support as well as practice change where needed through collective bargaining and collaboration where possible with stakeholders such as Superintendent groups and School Boards
