Thank you for choosing to take Course 29 in the Inclusion Works: Transformative Recruitment Practices certificate. These courses are for professionals looking to enhance workplace inclusivity and productivity through their recruitment practices. Understanding the nuances of disability management enables professionals to effectively support employees with disabilities, leading to a more diverse and engaged workforce. Additionally, hiring people with disabilities fosters a more inclusive workplace culture and brings unique perspectives and talents, enriching teams and driving innovation and success.

Description: Many workers with long-term physical and mental health conditions struggle when deciding whether to seek support from their workplace. In making decisions, they weigh risks like the loss of privacy or reputation if they disclose any support needs, versus concerns about job difficulties and changes to work performance if they don’t receive support. Workers, workplace representatives, and health professionals often report being unsure what workers should discuss and what might be helpful. This presentation discusses the development and evaluation of two interactive resources: a decision-support tool called DCIDE that helps workers navigate the complexity of disclosure decisions, and the Job Demands and Accommodation Planning Tool (JDAPT) that provides practical support and accommodation ideas relevant to a worker’s job demands. Both tools are freely available. They were developed and tested by research experts, people living with disabilities, community groups, and workplace organizations.

  • Define the decision-making process that workers undertake when considering whether to share personal health information with others in the workplace.
  • Describe a new resource that can help workers in decide whether to communicate their support and accommodation needs.

Monique Gignac, PhD

Dr. Monique Gignac is the Associate Scientific Director and a Senior Scientist at the Institute for Work & Health and Professor in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto. Dr. Gignac’s research examines health models of disability, stress, coping and adaptation and their importance in understanding the impact of chronic, disabling health conditions in the lives of adults across the life course, particularly participation in employment.
