Course Description

Catching chronic pain in the early stages can help reduce a workers' chance of becoming a long-term disability claimant. Learning to recognize and treat chronic pain in it's early stages can be confusing.

Dr. Howard Hamer will show the importance of recognizing and treating chronic pain in its early stages as well as providing early interventions and support in the workplace. 

During the session you will learn:

  • To understand the diagnostic differences between chronic pain & Chronic Pain Disorder DSM IV (Somatic Systemic Disorder, DSM V)

  • To recognize early signs of Chronic Pain Disorder (CPD)

  • To appreciate the need for early intervention and on site support to prevent CPD

Howard Hamer, MD

Dr. Hamer is a duly qualified physician, licensed to practice in the Province of Ontario. He has received a Masters of Science degree in occupational medicine from McGill University. He is a fellow of the Canadian Board of Occupational Medicine and has been directly involved with occupational health through transitional work programs, health and safety issues, long-term disability and return to work preplacement assessments since 1977. He is the Past President of the Occupational and Environmental Medical Association of Canada and has served on the Occupational and Environmental section of the Ontario Medical Association since 2002. Dr. Hamer presently is the Medical Director of the Functional & Pain Program, a program of Altum Health at the University Health Network, Toronto Western Hospital site in Toronto, Canada. This is a program for injured workers with chronic pain. He is also consults to various industries in the Greater Toronto area such as the City of Toronto, Baycrest Center for Geriatric Care, TevaCanada & the Canadian Blood Services with regard to all facets of occupational medicine.
